Piece by Piece: The Story of Nisrin's Hijab by Priya Huq (Graphic Novel Paperback)

Nisrin is a Bangladeshi American girl living in Milwaukie, Oregon, in 2002. Near the end of eight grade, she is the victim of a hate crime for wearing a headscarf while in Bangladeshi cultural dress for a school project. 

Deeply traumatized by the experience, Nisrin spends the summer depressed an isolated.  Other than weekly therapy, Nisrin doesn't leave the house until fall arrives and its time for her to begin freshman year at a new school. Nisrin tells her family that she is going to wear the hijab to school, much to their family's dismay.
